Tuesday 8th July, 21:00 hrs: BREAKFAST ON PLUTO
A vibrant, picturesque movie from Neil Jordan, the award winning director of The Crying Game, Interview with a Vampire, and The End of the Affair.
Set in the 1970’s, BREAKFAST ON PLUTO follows the exploits of Patrick Braden (Murphy), an endearing, but deceptively tough young man. Abandoned as a baby in his small Irish hometown and aware from a very early age that he is different, Patrick survives this harsh environment with the aid of his wit and charm, plus a sweet refusal to let anyone and anything change who he is.
Jordan weaves a wonderfully surreal and magical tale to bring us this funny, moving and poignant rites of passage account of a young man enduring the trials and tribulations he faces with a smile and unwavering faith in the inherent goodness in us all.
Thursday 10th July, 21:00 hrs: OUTING RILEY
A closeted Chicago architect wrestles with the prospect of coming out to his Irish Catholic brothers following the death of their parents in Stolen Summer writer/director Pete Jones' affectionate family comedy. His entire live, Bobby Riley (Jones) has been living a lie. The product of a traditional Irish-Catholic family, Bobby is a typical guy who likes beer and loves sports. In fact, the only notable difference between Bobby and your average Chicago Irish-Catholic is that Bobby happens to be gay.
For years, the only person who knew Bobby's well-guarded secret was his sister Maggie (Julie R. Pearl) - a no-nonsense lawyer with an open mind and no time for secrets. Though his live-in boyfriend Andy (Michael McDonald) longs for the day he will be able to express his love openly, Bobby insists on projecting a heterosexual image with a little assistance from longtime lesbian gal pal Carly (Dana Gilhooley). On the heels of their father's death, Maggie attempts to convince Bobby that the time has come to tell his brothers the truth about his lifestyle. The only problem is that Bobby's brothers aren't simply straight - they're fairly narrow as well. Of course prankish Luke (Nathan Fillion) and unstable Connor (Stoney Westmoreland) could probably come to grips with the truth, but what about Jack (Dev Kennedy)? The eldest sibling and a devoted clergyman, Jack would most certainly have an adverse reaction to such a life-changing announcement.
When Bobby determines to reveal his secret and becomes suddenly tongue tied at the last minute, it's up to outspoken sister Maggie to set the record straight whether Bobby likes it or not. – Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide.
Friday 11th July, 21:00 hrs: THE GYMNAST
Jane Hawkins was once one of America's top gymnasts, but events and injury prevented her from fullling her Olympic destiny. Almost twenty years have passed in obscurity, working hand to mouth as a massage therapist while slowly disappearing in a passionless marriage. In an attempt to give meaning to her life, she has been secretly trying to get pregnant, against her husband David's wishes. Though still in peak condition, her doctor informs her that she may have waited too long to have children. And without David's money, she can't afford the fertility drugs that might make the difference.
A chance meeting with Denise, a former gymnastic teammate, provokes Jane to re-examine her life and past. While visiting a gymnasium, she is recognised by a coach, who recruits Jane for a completely different kind of venture: being part of a Cirque Du Soleil type of aerial act.
Also recruited to be part of the act is an enigmatic dancer named Serena. When events force the coach out of the project, Jane and Serena attempt to put the act together themselves, and in the process, fall in love. After Denise convinces her that the affair with Serena is a form of denial, Jane must choose between having a child with her suddenly willing husband or creating a completely new life for herself.
